Goodbye in a way

I have never been much of a planner and more of a doer.  So it follows that I just dove into making this blog with no real idea of what I wanted to call it and where I wanted to go with it.  As it turns out, in naming my future shop “Ye Olde Fortress Shoppe” I found the perfect name for myself in Ye Olde Fortress of Awesome.  Since I wish to open an accessory shop this fall blending my love of current trends, 20s flair and 50s fashion I want to make it easier to find my store.  Therefore, I reached the decision to transfer these posts over to a new site with “ye olde” in the URL.

While a handful of the few followers I accumulated in my short tenure on this blog know the link, I thought I would leave this here if you wish to follow my blogging adventures.  I’ll leave this post up for about a month because I don’t often check every single blog on my RSS feed and therefore assume others don’t either.  After that, this entire blog shall be deleted! Dun dun duunnnnn…

Yesterday I wore…

…my rollerskates outside! In February! Whatever this tomfoolery is, I ain’t mad at it.

Attitude for Gratitude

At the end of last week I received a delightful treat in the mail!

I often participate in blog comment giveaways and never win so I all but gave up.  I’m glad I commented on The Glamorous Housewife‘s post because I finally won! Hmmmm… I wonder what it could be.  Perhaps The Vintage Tea Party Book?

Why yes it is! I haven’t read any one section in depth, but after looking at every single page I found this book is even more darling than I anticipated.  Thanks Glamorous Housewife for such a lovely prize :)

I <3 NY

I haven’t used scrapblog in a while (mostly because each time I go back they make you pay for more and more things that used to be free ): but I figured if I’m going to make you suffer through my camera phone pictures until I get a working digital camera the least I could do is make them fancy for you!  It’s fun being a tourist, even in places you’ve been a gajillion times.  Fortunately New York makes it so easy to slip into tourist mode.

Musicals are so not my thing, so while digesting a burger and waiting to eat still another burger James and I went to see The Woman in Black.

We started our mini burger tour with our first ever J G Melon burger and I can definitely tell you it won’t be our last.  I haven’t been able to get this burger out of my mind, it was that delectable.  It’s a little place with a large sign out front to guide your way to the best burger ever.  Seriously.   We went to our old haunt Island Burger later on and I couldn’t stop myself from wishing it was the J G Melon burger all over again.  I did like the updated renovations and the bar Island Burger had installed since the last time I was there, but still… J G Melon has stolen my little less than three.

All of the pictures for my outfit came out blurry or distorted, but I had fun posing like a tourist in Time Square, especially when we ran into my nemesis Elmo.  I rather enjoyed the juxtaposition of my patterns, as you can see better in my preview post here.

While James figures out which subway we should board, I figured I should post an outfit preview shot I took at the PATH station, while bored.

A Quickie

Here is just a splash of what has been making me happy this week!

Emily of The Black Apple has a room in her house that looks like this:

You could feed an entire army of green eyed monsters with the amount of jealousy this dressing space  ignites in me :)

Erickson Beamon at Fashion Week.  I don’t think I need to express my complete and utter SQUEE! over these flapper-inspired jewels and photoshoot.  I wish these dresses were for sale…

Oh my effing gee!

Danielle Kroll‘s amazing typography illustration was inspired by the Gromble’s shoes.  I absolutely love the retro accessories these letters are donning.  How could I not fall in love with her blog on first sight?!

Here’s hoping this week brings just as many moments of delight as last week did!

Serendipitous Strippers

In searching for vintage style I somehow ended up in the Land of Vintage Strippers on Youtube, which is a place similar to the Island of Misfit Toys in utter awesomeness, only made better with secret glitter+mesh bras hidden under regular bras and birds assisting in the nakedification process.    Here are my top three vintage burlesque acts.  Enjoy this old timey NSFW action!

And now, a photo essay

I didn’t mean to become a clothing-centric blog, but that’s just the way life has gone lately.  I’m hoping to carve out a chunk of time for crafting real soon (I know I’ve needed it these days).  In the mean time, look at all the pretty colors, Duke!

And the winner is…

Thank you for all your feedback on my roller derby trading card dilemma friends! There was a strong divide between shots A and C, which was exactly where I was torn. Drats.  After talking to one of the rollergirls that ordered trading cards last year I am pretty sure I can order both.  Phew!  Victory is ours :)

I mentioned my after-photo-shoot photo shoot in that last post, where I rearranged some of my outfit to appear as if I were a Slytherin from 1928 and here are the shots:

I added some old timey filters because it seemed appropriate, wouldn’t you agree?  Besides, almost all of the portraits and pictures from the Harry Potter movies make it seem as if photograph potions are stuck in the past anyway.  For those of you that don’t spend your free time researching clothing from the 1920s, I feel it is necessary to break down exactly what makes this 1920s  daywear for a trendy Hogwarts student.  You can’t really make out the crochet detailing of my black dress since the under layer I paired it with is also black, but the detail work is very much inspired by art deco.  The crisp geometric lines and shapes that mark this period began in Paris in the 1920s, so of course a stylish young witch of Hogwarts would be adorned with such patterns.  The dress has a rather high hemline with very fluid movement, which was of course very scandalous for the time.  Additionally, the sweater has a dropped waist which only adds to the flapper vibe.  Lastly, the bob and beaded headband were the bread and butter for muggle flappers, so of course a Slytherin flapper would have a bright green bob to increase the outrage of her professors.

So yeah… I’m a dork.  I’ve known this for a while and feel quite content in that fact.  You love me anyway <3

Help! I need somebody…

Last week I discussed the selection of my outfit for my roller derby trading card and said I would share it with you all once Hale Yeah finished taking the pictures and making the card; HOWEVER, he took so many wonderful shots I don’t know which to choose!  Help me?  Below are my top three shots, but I’m not sure which one really screams Voldeloxx.  What do you think?

Shot A, or I was like MORSMORDRE and she was all Aaaahhhh! and I was like yeaaaaahhhh :)

Shot B, or Hell yeah that’s a Slytherin Prefect badge…what of it?

Shot C, or brb om nom nom nom snake

There will be another post in the near future of an after-photoshoot-photoshoot I did where I changed most of my clothes and hung around my house as if it were the Slytherin common room circa 1928.  Just go with it for now, you’ll see what I mean soon…  I just have to rescue the pictures from James’s iPhone.

P.s. If any of you are interested in following more of my roller derby antics and Harry Potterisms you should like Voldeloxx on facebook :)
